Candela is distributed through Apple's App Store and Google Play, and the store you got it from has terms of its own. On iOS, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies; on Android, the Google Play Terms of Service do. Where the store's terms and this page disagree, the store's win.

Age

You must be at least 16 to use Candela. The app asks you to confirm this.

What you get

A personal licence to use Candela on the devices you own or control. You may not resell it, rent it, or take it apart to make a competing product.

A purchase is tied to the store account that made it. Buying on iOS does not unlock the Android app, and the other way round — they are two separate products in two separate stores, and neither store can see the other's receipts. The journal file itself moves between them freely; the licence does not.

What you pay

• The first 14 days are free and cost nothing at any point.
• After that, writing new pages requires a one-time purchase — US$3.99, or the equivalent your store shows in your country. It is not a subscription: it does not renew and there is nothing to cancel.
• Whether or not you buy, you keep the right to read, edit, search, export and delete everything you already wrote. We do not hold your own words to ransom.
• Refunds are handled by the store, not by us — Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, Google at Google Play support. If you are a consumer in the EU or UK, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything on this page.

What you write stays yours

You own everything you put into Candela. We claim no licence over it, we do not publish it, we do not sell it, and we do not use it to train anything. We store it so the app can show it back to you — nothing more. See the privacy policy.

Your side of it

• Keep whatever locks your journal. If you forget your PIN, nobody — including us — can get you back in. On iOS, if you have iCloud switched on you can set a new PIN after unlocking with Face ID; with iCloud off, or on Android where there is no cloud copy at all, a forgotten PIN means the journal on that phone is gone.
• Keep the key to any backup you make. A backup made while you had a PIN opens only with that PIN. On iOS a backup made without one opens only on a phone signed in to the same iCloud Keychain; on Android every backup uses a PIN. We cannot open any of them for you.
• On Android, export a file now and then. There is no cloud copy and the app is deliberately excluded from Android's automatic backup, so uninstalling the app or losing the phone loses the journal with it. The export is in Settings → Privacy & data and it is free whether or not you have paid.
• Do not use Candela to store material that is illegal to possess where you are.
• Do not attack, overload or attempt to break into the service.

What we do not promise

Candela is provided as it is. We work to keep it available and to keep your journal safe, but we cannot promise the service will never be interrupted or that no data will ever be lost through a fault, a device failure or an act outside our control. Export your journal from time to time if it matters to you — the option is right there in Settings and it costs nothing.

Candela is not a medical device. It does not provide therapy, diagnosis or treatment, and it is not a substitute for professional care. If you are struggling, please talk to someone who can help.

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you actually paid for the app. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury or anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

Ending it

You can stop at any time: erase everything from inside the app, or simply delete it — see Delete everything. There is no account to close and nothing to cancel, because there was never a subscription and never a sign-up.

Changes

If we change these terms in a way that matters, the app will show you before you carry on using it.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Vietnam. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live, and you may bring proceedings there.
